December: The Most Magical Month for Ski Enthusiasts

As December rolls in, the snow-dusted peaks of the French Alps begin to awaken from their off-season slumber, marking the official start of the ski season. For ski enthusiasts, this month isn’t just the start of winter — it’s the start of a season packed with thrilling descents, cozy après-ski evenings, and festive holiday celebrations.

Why December Is Special for Skiers

December is a month of transformation. French ski resorts, from the bustling Three Valleys to charming smaller villages, have spent weeks preparing for the influx of eager skiers and snowboarders. Snow cannons have been primed, pistes groomed, and lift operators are ready to welcome guests.

While early December sees a mix of dedicated skiers and savvy travelers seeking quieter slopes, the latter half of the month kicks off the holiday buzz. Families, couples, and groups of friends descend on the resorts, making the mountains feel alive with festive cheer.

Key Dates for Ski Enthusiasts

December is packed with important dates for skiers:

  • Early December: Many French resorts, including Val d’Isère, Courchevel, and Tignes, will have opened their slopes by now. Check out our blog on French Ski Resort Opening Days for exact dates.
  • Mid-December: School holidays begin in several countries, leading to busier slopes.
  • Christmas Week (December 25th): Resorts pull out all the stops with festive events, Santa visits, and torchlight descents.
  • New Year’s Eve (December 31st): Firework displays and celebrations light up the mountains.

How Busy Is December Expected to Be?

This season is shaping up to be one of the busiest yet, as demand for winter getaways continues to soar. Accommodation and transfer bookings have seen a sharp rise, with families and groups eager to enjoy a snow-filled Christmas. To avoid disappointment, secure your transport and passes early — particularly if you’re traveling during peak holiday periods.

Tips for Preparing for a Christmas Ski Holiday with Kids

Taking young, excited kids on a ski holiday requires a bit of extra preparation, but the joy on their faces as they experience the magic of the mountains is worth it.

  1. Dress for the Weather: Invest in quality ski clothing to keep everyone warm and dry. Layers are key!
  2. Book Early Lessons: Ski schools are in high demand, so reserve spots for your little ones as soon as possible.
  3. Plan Rest Days: Avoid burnout by incorporating some downtime with activities like sledging or hot chocolate breaks.
  4. Pack Smart: Don’t forget essentials like sunscreen, lip balm, and plenty of snacks to keep energy levels high.
  5. Get Them Excited: Share videos and stories about skiing to build their anticipation — and patience — for travel day.

In December, many French ski resorts embrace the holiday spirit by welcoming Santa Claus himself. Look out for Santa appearances in:

  • Les Menuires: Santa arrives with gifts and magic shows.
  • Avoriaz: A charming Christmas market and Santa’s workshop make it a family favorite.
  • Chamonix: Torchlit descents and parades with Santa create a festive atmosphere.
  • La Plagne: Santa’s grotto and family-friendly events ensure a magical experience.

Easy to use comparison website for ski transfers.

Easy to use. Plenty of quotes. Can add extra flight details in the comments box. This was required due to our group arriving on two different planes. Comments were not shown at the summary stage before paying. When I went back a page to check them they had disappeared so I had to input the details again.
