Flying to Tignes: Closest Airports and Tips

Tignes doesn’t have its own airport, but there are several airports within a few hours’ drive:

  • Chambéry Airport: The closest airport to Tignes (about 2 hours by car), Chambéry is perfect for those who want a short transfer. However, it has limited flights, especially midweek.
  • Geneva Airport: With a much wider range of international flights, Geneva is the most popular airport for Tignes visitors. The transfer time is about 3 hours, but you’ll find plenty of transport options.
  • Lyon Airport: Lyon offers more flight options than Chambéry and is about 3 hours from Tignes. It’s a good choice for those flying from outside Europe.
  • Grenoble Airport: Another option about 2.5 hours away, Grenoble offers fewer flights than Geneva but has the benefit of being less crowded.

Insider Tip: If you’re flying into Geneva or Lyon, book your flights early as these routes tend to fill up quickly during peak ski season.

Private Transfers: Hassle-Free and Flexible

Private transfers are one of the most convenient ways to get to Tignes. Especially when traveling in groups or with lots of luggage, it’s a stress-free option!

  • Door-to-door service: Your driver will pick you up from the airport and drop you off at your accommodation in Tignes, no matter how remote it is.

  • Flexible timings: Unlike public transport, private transfers can fit around your flight arrival and departure times, making them ideal for late-night or early-morning arrivals.

  • Best for groups and families: If you’re traveling in a group, the cost per person can often be cheaper than a shared shuttle, and you’ll have the added benefit of privacy.

Insider Tip: Many private transfer companies offer discounts for return bookings, so make sure to book your transfer both ways in advance.

Shared Shuttles: Affordable for Solo Travelers

If you’re traveling solo or on a budget, shared shuttles are an affordable alternative. These shuttle services usually run between Geneva, Lyon, and Grenoble airports and Tignes, though you may need to wait for other passengers, and the journey can take a little longer with multiple stops along the way.

  • Regular schedules: Shared shuttles operate frequently, especially on weekends when most skiers are arriving. It’s a great option if you’re flying on a budget airline and don’t mind a slightly longer trip.

  • Affordability: Shared shuttles are significantly cheaper than private transfers, particularly if you’re traveling alone or in a small group.

Insider Tip: If you’re arriving at Geneva Airport, consider booking a shuttle with a flexible time slot. This allows some leeway in case your flight is delayed or you have to wait for others to join.

Public Transport: Trains and Buses

For the eco-conscious traveler or those looking to save money, public transport can be a viable option, though it requires a bit more planning.

  • Train to Bourg-Saint-Maurice: The nearest train station to Tignes is in Bourg-Saint-Maurice, about 45 minutes away. You can take the train from major cities like Paris, Lyon, or Geneva. Once in Bourg-Saint-Maurice, you’ll need to catch a bus or taxi to Tignes.

  • Bus from Bourg-Saint-Maurice: Local buses run regularly from Bourg-Saint-Maurice to Tignes. The journey takes about 45 minutes and is a cost-effective way to reach the resort, though you may need to plan for additional time if traveling with heavy luggage or ski gear.

Insider Tip: Consider booking a TGV (high-speed train) to Bourg-Saint-Maurice if you’re traveling from Paris. It’s faster and more comfortable than driving or taking a bus from the French capital.

Renting a Car: Freedom to Explore

If you plan on exploring the area around Tignes or want the flexibility to travel on your own schedule, renting a car can be a good option. However, bear in mind that driving in the Alps, especially in winter conditions, can be challenging.

  • Winter tires and chains: Ensure that your rental car is equipped with winter tires and chains, which are mandatory for driving in the mountains during the ski season.

  • Parking in Tignes: Be aware that parking in Tignes can be limited and expensive, especially during peak season. Some accommodations offer parking, but it’s always best to check before you arrive.

Insider Tip: If you’re only planning to ski in Tignes, a rental car may not be necessary, as the resort has an excellent internal shuttle system and everything is within walking distance.

Helicopter Transfers: Arrive in Style

For those seeking a luxury experience, helicopter transfers from Geneva or Lyon airports are the fastest (and most stylish) way to get to Tignes. The transfer takes around 40 minutes, and you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the Alps.

Insider Tip: If you’re celebrating a special occasion or just want to splurge, consider booking a helicopter transfer. Many companies offer packages that include scenic flights over the Mont Blanc massif before dropping you in Tignes.

No matter how you choose to travel, getting to Tignes is part of the adventure! From private transfers to shared shuttles and even scenic train rides, there’s an option for every budget and travel style. The key is to plan ahead, especially during the busy winter months, to ensure a smooth and stress-free start to your ski holiday.

Easy to use comparison website for ski transfers.

Easy to use. Plenty of quotes. Can add extra flight details in the comments box. This was required due to our group arriving on two different planes. Comments were not shown at the summary stage before paying. When I went back a page to check them they had disappeared so I had to input the details again.
